After years of doing art shows and finding it impossible to set a price on my art that felt reasonable, I watched a TED Talk with Amanda Palmer. She found that letting people set their own prices, paying what they could afford, and determining what the piece was worth to them created a much healthier and real connection between the artist and the patron. For me, I create art because I have the thing inside me, and I need to get it out. When someone connects with something I've created, that is an amazing feeling.
I would rather someone pay less for something they really connected with than have someone buy something I've created because it might be worth something more when I die. I don't think money should be a barrier to appreciating art and being able to have a piece of it for yourself. Whatever my patrons can afford, and what the piece is worth to them is the price. I work with everyone at every budget.
